Mount Santubong is located about 35 km north of the state capital Kuching. The Santubong Peninsula is home to Sarawak's finest beach resorts and its famous Sarawak Cultural Village. The Santubong area is one of the best places in Sarawak to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. Visitors will need a keen eye to spot these dolphins as they usually surface only for air. It is quite common to see Irrawaddy dolphins circling small fishing boats.

Batang Ai National Park is part of the region’s largest trans-national protected area for tropical rainforest conservation. Home to some Iban longhouses, there are animal tracking and traditional fishing expeditions to be had, where you can follow and learn from the local Iban tribe on their methods and skill. The itinerary spans three days and two nights of roughing it and catching your own meal, and it became a trip to remember for the group sent by Sarawak Tourism Board.

The Long Semadoh region is home to 7 villages, namely Puneng Trusan, Long Telingan, Long Semadoh Rayeh, Long Semadoh Nesab, Long Tanid, Long Beluyu and Long Kerabangan. Most of the villagers of this region get their income from rice farming, buffalo herding, cow herding and the planting and harvesting of palm oil. One of the must-visit caves in Sarawak that I had the opportunity to explore is no other that the world famous Niah Caves, which is located just two hours from the city of Miri in Northern Sarawak. The massive cave system is located in the Niah National Park, which is one of the top three national parks in Sarawak Borneo. Niah Cave was once a trading cave, where traders from around the world would pay a visit to trade wares with the birds nest that was gathered by the locals from around here.

As a frequent traveler, and especially all over Sarawak in the last 10 years, I have to admit that I have never been to the popular Annah Rais Longhouse. This is one of the most popular longhouses that a majority of travellers would visit and is sold by local travel agents. I have been to traditional longhouses deep in the interiors of Sarawak, at places like Lemanak and Batang Ai, which are easily five to seven hours traveling, but not to Annah Rais in the main Padawan area.

Having been around for almost 20 years, the Serikin town border market is truly one of Kuching’s local hidden gems. My first visit here was back in 2010 and as a local, I was quite surprised that a market of this calibre existed just our of Kuching city. A recent trip back to the Serikin Border Market in October 2017 was even more exciting as I had looked forward to coming back once again, to see if there had been any changes, and to my surprise, there were.

During my many visits to the Bario Highlands in northern Sarawak, I always love trekking and exploring this beautiful place as there is so much nature to absorb. At some of the trekking trails, you will come across massive man made stone structures or even stone carvings. The man made structures or carvings are called Megaliths, which date back thousands of years and is an incredible sight when you stand next to them.

For the adventurer, there is a hot spring lodge located deep in the Lawas district in northern Sarawak. Operated by a local Sarawakian, this very rustic and basic lodge can only be accessed via 4WD. From the town of Lawas, it is around 70 kilometers drive through old logging roads and thick secondary rainforest.Once here, the warm Lun Bawang hospitality is seen as the owner is very passionate about his place. The natural hot spring water is pumped into his man made pools from a source about 100 meters away.

For those who are into volunteer tourism, the Talang Satang National Park in Sarawak offers a unique Sea Turtle Volunteer Program that is managed by Sarawak Forestry. This eco-tourism initiative has been around for a number of years and is only available from May to September. A four day turtle volunteer program lets you experience beach patrols, marking turtle nests, digging digging up and collecting the turtle eggs, burying them again in the hatchery, tagging and measuring of turtles, data recording and even releasing of baby turtles.

In the outskirts of Sibu in central Sarawak lies one of the interesting ethnic lodges of the Melanau tribe in Sarawak Borneo. Called Lamin Dana, this unique lodge is located in the village of Kampung Telian, which is in the Mukah district. Built traditionally to resemble the Melanau Tallhouse, the owners have converted this lodge into one of central Sarawak’s must-visit places. The lodge sits along the Telian River, which is in the heartland of the Melanau people.

From November 11th to 13th, we had a big event, "Sarawak International Dragon Boat Race 2016" at the Kuching Waterfront. "Dragon Boat" was originally from China and nowadays it is known as a ‘New Sport’ across the world. The keys to winning the race are teamwork and timing. There are only 4 rehabilitation centre for Orang Utan in the world, and Semengoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Kuching is one of them. Here, they are working on the preservation of Orang Utans that have lost / become separated from their mothers, or that have been ilegally kept, and taking care of them in order to return them to the wild.

I am a 21-year-old Japanese student visiting Sarawak, Malaysia, for the first time in my life. A beautiful state filled with optimistic/respectful residents and full of nature. I have spent half of my life in the U.S. and never experienced life in Asia outside of my home country, Japan. Even though Malaysia and Japan are in the same region, the experiences are very different within the two countries, which makes it crucial for first timers visiting the country. However, growing accustomed to the life in Malaysia, I have encountered many wonderful people that are making my stay in Malaysia a wonderful experience.

The Visit Sibu Year 2017 Phase 1 was launched on March 12, 2016 in Sibu Town Square (also known as Dataran Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang bin Tuanku Othman) by Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who was representing Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem. The launching began with the local singer Tony Engkabi singing an Iban song and ended with the grand performance by Malaysian singing sensation Shila Amzah with Chinese, English and Malay songs which celebrated the mix of races of the Sibu people.

Payeh Maga, which means swampy highlands in the Lun Bawang language, has three peaks. They are Gunung Doa which stands at 570m, GunungTuyo (1,752m) on the east side and Gunung Matallan (1,828m), the highest peak, on the west quadrant. Forest Department Sarawak had carry out a survey on the area’s avifauna and the survey showed Payeh Maga has over 180 bird species including 27 endemic bird species , comprising over 50% of the Bornean total.

Located in Serian, Kota Samarahan Division near Bantang Village, Kuching, Serian road. Gua Sireh is an important archaeological site in South Western Sarawak. Excavation works have recovered pottery shreds and food debris as animal bones and shellfish. The cave could have been occupied as early as 20.000 years ago. Pottery was produced around 4.000 years ago. At the same time domesticated animals (dogs and pigs) and plants (rice) were introduced.

Kubah National Park is built with massive sandstone ridge with its three mountain peaks, the 911m high Gunung Serapi, Gunung Selang and Gunung Sendok. Longevity noodles* and the art of making them is kept very much alive in Sibu. The art is driven as much by passion as it is by strong tradition. The Foochows* consider this a must-have dish for auspicious occasions such as Chinese New Year, birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. The Sarawak Regatta is back ; 4th - 7th September 2014. The route will stretch from the start point west of the Sarawak river to the finishing point, up river at the Kuching Waterfront, 2,000 meters away.

Three new elements have been added to inject freshness into the festival. The Malay House will be used for the first time, giving the workshop there an intimate feel. It is limited, however, to fifty persons for health and safety reasons. In the comfort of the Theatre, two daily chamber-styled concerts will be presented instead. We often hear of comments that the benak (tidal bore) phenomenon in Sri Aman can only be viewed at certain times of the year. It is not true. In fact, it can be viewed twice a day throughout the year. Just that the tidal bores are bigger and more spectacular during king tide combined with dry season. But we won't bore you with science here. However, here is an interesting fact; the Batang Lupar Tidal Bore is ranked in the list of Top 10 Tidal Bores in the world

MIRI, Tuesday – Sarawak Tourism Board, today, launched the Car Sticker Contest in conjunction with Borneo Jazz 2014 to remind the public on the upcoming festival which will take place in Miri this coming May 9-10. The Miri City Mayor, Mr Lawrence Lai together with STB CEO, Dato’ Rashid Khan launched sticker campaign at Jalan Kingsway opposite the Mayor’s office in Miri this afternoon. About five hundred Borneo Jazz 2014 car stickers will be distributed to motorists throughout Miri city through Borneo Post office at Jalan Sri Dagang (Miri Waterfront) and the Visitor Information Centre Miri at Jalan Melayu.

There were four of us in a group attending this annual festival in Sri Aman. The tidal bore is one of Sarawak's natural phenomenon which the locals call it 'Benak'. We started our journey from Kuching at around 8.30am, stopped over at Serian for breakfast. From there, we travelled another 150 km on sealed road with beautiful countryside and longhouses along the way to reach 'Pekan' (bazaar) Lachau. 'Pekan' Lachau is known locally as a 'Cowboy Bazaar'. SARAWAK, Malaysia – Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) today announced the opening of volunteer program for its latest organized music event, Asia Music Festival (AMF) to be held in the city of Miri, Sarawak. With the inaugural event less than two months away, locals and internationals may have a chance to attend the event, participate and be involved in many aspects of the festival organizing in exchange for volunteer service. STB is currently accepting applications for various management areas of the event such as the liaison officer for performing acts, schelpers for handling of the musical instrument and gate control area.

An international crew of 400 will make Kuching their home base from 12 July to 1st August 2013. Interacting with the international crew is part of the MV Logos Hope experience. We at Sarawak Tourism Board are pleased to welcome the crew members who come from forty-five countries to Sarawak.

27 June, 2013 -- Get ready for MV Logos Hope, The World’s Largest floating book fair returns to Kuching! Since 1972 GBA ships have visited Kuching, Malaysia five times, with the most recent visit in October 2011 and welcomed over 114,000 visitors. Now after two years GBA Ship’s fourth vessel MV Logos Hope returns in July 2013. This is the newest and largest vessel, carrying the world’s largest floating book fair and an international crew of 400 people.

TV Tokyo came to Kuching in March to shoot a documentary of a Japanese living in Kuching. This person, Madam Sakai who was originally from Osaka, has been residing in this capital city of Sarawak for more than thirty years. Kazuya Sakusabe who led a 2-man crew also went on location shoot at the various places of interest in Kuching during the four-day trip.

KUCHING, Tuesday – Tickets for the upcoming Borneo Jazz in Miri are now on sale at Visitors Information Centres in Kuching, Sibu and Miri, Sarawak. Tickets are priced at RM60 for single entry and RM100 for a two-day pass. Children under the age of 12 years will enjoy 50% discount on each ticket. Borneo Jazz tickets are also available online at www.ticketcharge.com.my. Borneo Jazz, this year, will see seven famous international acts and one local band making their debut appearance on the festival stage.

Borneo Jazz this year is a bit of a geographical fruit trifle. The 2013 edition will be a blend of eastern spice, western punch, smooth northern cream and southern sunshine. The jazz festival is now in its 8th year. The dates are 10th and 11th May. As usual, a Friday and Saturday of starlit music, and then the Sunday to recover. It’s going to be, as Borneo Jazz usually is, Jazz Plus Plus.

KUCHING, Saturday – Three hundred and fifty Germans sailed into Bintulu, Sarawak recently on the MS Europa, part of the Hapag LLoyd Cruises. The cruise ship was on its 17 Days “Hong Kong to Singapore” journey commencing in Hong Kong and cruising through the Philippines, Sabah, Brunei, Bintulu in Sarawak and ending in Singapore. This is the 2nd cruise ship arrival for 2013. On arrival the visitors were welcomed in typical Sarawakian style courtesy of Sarawak Tourism Board. They also had the opportunity to go on a city tour and paid a visit to the historic Niah Caves.

LONDON, Tuesday – The Iban master weavers from Kapit, Sarawak are among others who will demonstrate their textile weaving at World Eco-Fiber and Textile (WEFT) Art held in London, UK. Mr Bangie Embol and Mdm Nancy Ngali from Rumah Garie longhouse, Sungai Kain, Ulu Kapit are mong others who will demonstrate their textile weaving. Mr Michael Lim, renowned fine batik artist from Kuching will also exhibit his works.

We have discovered a new group of Rafflesia in BUKIT TASAU, KPG LEBOR, GEDONG, SERIAN. The journey to Bukit Tasau takes about 30 or 45 minutes drive from Kuching City to Serian Town, another 30 minutes from Serian Town to the junction of Bukit Tasau foothill (Kpg Lebor). Continued by another 20 minutes drive up to the hill, and trekking to the RAFFLESIA area takes about 25 minutes.

KUCHING, Friday- Sarawak Tourism Board today welcomed a group of French journalists, which also consists of two French MasterChefs from Paris. The group is on a gastronomic, culture and nature visit to Sarawak arranged by Sarawak Tourism Board and Tourism Malaysia Paris. Arriving from Kuala Lumpur this morning, the group was greeted by members of Sarawak Tourism Board at Kuching International Airport. They will go on a 3-day 2-night visit, exploring Kuching and its surrounding attractions which include a Bidayuh Longhouse, Semengoh Orang Utan Rehab Centre, Sunday Market, Sarawak Cultural Village and the city attractions.

Kuching, Friday : The Sarawak Tourism Board early this week held a ‘Buyers Meet Sellers’ Session in-conjunction with the Jakarta Agents Familiarization Trip to the State capital. Dabai is one of many exotic fruits in Sarawak. It is commonly known as or kana - means 'black olive' in Hokkien, but technically it is not an olive. The dabai tree can grow up to 21 meters high and it's furry leaves are thin and its twigs are covered with golden down. A planting distance of 9 meters is recommended. You need to prune the young trees to produce more bushy growth.

This the first thing that strikes a visitor upon entering the longhouse is how well standing the place is. Rumah (house) Nyuka was built in 1955 and the durability of the wood species certainly reflects its reputation. Another is the tinsel-like atmosphere inside it. Tinseltown? Tinselhouse? :-) Anyway, there is a certain 'green' message to this effort though.

Chinese forms the second largest group of Sarawak's population after the main Iban tribe."Chinese pioneers first came to Sarawak as traders and explorers in the 6th century. The Malay forms the third largest group of people in Sarawak, after the Iban and Chinese. In Kuching, the Malay Kampungs (villages) along the riverside next to Fort Margherita have some beautiful examples of traditional and modern Malay architecture. There are some more superb Malay houses around Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, behind the Kuching Mosque.

Located 24KM from the Kuching City, the major attraction of Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is the Orang Utan. mTo get there, you have 4 options depending on your budget.1. Public Bus - Visitors can take the City Public Bus, bus no. K6, rate RM3.50 per way. First bus depart at 7.15am and the last bus depart at 4.15pm; for every 3 hours interval. Note that the bus will stop at the entrance of Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and you will have to walk for about 20 – 25 minutes from main entrance to Orang Utan's feeding area.

The Iban Heartland - Iban claims the largest population, thus making this language the most widely used in Sarawak. The Iban, formerly known as Sea Dayaks, are famous for their head-hunting past, their massive ironwood longhouses, their ornate body tattooing, their wonderful weaving skills, and of course their potent rice wine, tuak, which is always offered to visitors.

Sarawak Laksa - The Sarawak Laksa is essentially vermicelli rice noodles (bee hoon), cooked in a shrimp-based broth that is made to thicken with coconut milk. This dish is served with generous amounts of crunchy bean sprouts, a few boiled prawns and garnished with shredded chicken and slivers of egg omelette. For added spice, there's the thick sambal paste that is usually served on the side.

THE STRING SISTERS is a band that I’ve been lusting over for a long time. Six of the world’s leading female Celtic violinists backed by an all male rhythm section. With their own frantically busy solo careers, they cannot get together very often. To actually find that they can make it for the Rainforest weekend was like winning the lottery.

Buah' means fruit in Bahasa Malaysia. So buah engkalak simply means ‘engkalak’ fruit. All of our three trees are fruiting again and this week we harvested a big basketful. Engkalak or Litsea garciae belong to the same family as avocado. I didn’t like this fruit before; it truly is an acquired taste much like avocado too. But now, I love it!

Borneo Jazz is actually just round the corner. It’s a definite East-West flavor there this year. And a fairly balanced mix (I think!) of men and women musicians. F.V.E. Project -- Most emotional setting at the festival is going to be F.V.E. Project who is based in Kuala Lumpur, but guitarist Dean Sim is a Miri-boy so it is a home-coming of sorts.

In Sarawak, a visit to an authentic longhouse is considered a must. In the Central Region of Sarawak, an Iban longhouse is one of the main attractions for tourists. Several other ethnic groups traditionally live in longhouses, so expect a variety of ways in which you are welcomed. Traditionally the Iban do not shake hands to welcome visitors. Today, though, this is highly acceptable.

Mukah is the 10th Division in Sarawak and have been declared as a Division on 1st March 2003. Usually visitors like myself prefer to use express boat or speed boat via Dalat rather than by bus or car to Mukah. It is because of its unique and interesting scenery along much of the way.The journey to Dalat from the embarkation point of Sibu, takes about 2 hours by speedboat and about 2 ½ hours by land.

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism and Heritage Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam announced this yesterday at a press conference held at his office.
