Sarawak Tourism Board has strengthened its marketing efforts in attracting more tourists from China, Taiwan and Japan by signing up Sarawak-born singing sensation Nicholas Teo, 23, to be its Tourism Ambassador.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Nicholas and STB to seal this working cooperation. The event was held on May 28 and it was witnessed by the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism Tuan Haji Serudu Hoklai.
Under the MOU, Nicholas will be Sarawak’s Tourism Ambassador for one year and he has been entrusted to promote Sarawak in all the places he performed as well as doing promotional activities.
Places of interest in Sarawak are also featured in his video clips.
Nicholas made it big in the music industry after he won the Astro Talent Quest in 2002. The talented Nicholas, who hailed from Kuching, broke into international market last year after his debut album released in 2004, was selling few thousand copies in Malaysia and Singapore.
The star who was named the Best New Talent at the Fifth Golden Chinese Music Award and Best New Talent Artist in the Singapore Hit Awards last year.
Nicholas’ popularity among the local fans was also evidence as big crowd also turned up to see the star at the MOU signing, most braving the hot afternoon weather.
Young Malaysian Movement has also appointed Nicholas as the Youth Ambassador for two consecutive years since 2004 and he was chosen because of his young, fresh and healthy image.
With Nicholas’ popularity, Sarawak Tourism Board is hoping to see a significant increase in the arrival of Chinese tourists this year. Last year 18,927 arrival from China was recorded and this indicated an increased of 12 per cent from the previous year.
