Sibu to Launch Flute Festival Next Year: Wong

By Nicholas Lo

SIBU, Sept 6 -- Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is about to launch a flute festival here encouraged by the overwhelming success of Kuching's Rainforest Musical Festival and lately the Miri Jazz Festival.

Tourism Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the proposed Sibu International Flute Festival would be incorporated into the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) next year.

Locals would see many flutists from all over the world and there would also be a flute exhibition, he said when launching a special supplement (a magazine) for STB yesterday at Paramount Hotel.

Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister and Minister of Urban Development, also disclosed that Sibu would have a tour coach next year.

He said STB would be providing the 40-seater coach for local players in the tourism industry.

Initially, the vehicle would be in the charge of STB but the ultimate goal was to let the tour agents have full control of it, he said.

On the special supplement, Wong said 20,000 copies had been printed, said they would be distributed to tourism players all over the world.

"The magazine is a source for travel ideas," he said, adding that tourists exploring central Sarawak would find the magazine useful and interesting.

It is published by Creative Advances Technology Sdn. Bhd.

Also present at the launching ceremony were STB's CEO Gracie Geike, Sibu Division Resident Chai Moi Fong, and Rohizam Yusoff CEO/MD of Virtual Malaysia a wholly owned subsidiary of Creative Advances Technology Sdn. Bhd.
