| Jazz Festival packs them in MIRI : The Miri International Jazz Festival 2007 drew a big crowd during the two nights the bands performed at a leading hotel here. Organising chairman Michael Lu said yesterday a total of 4,560 tickets were sold out - 560 more than the targeted 4,000 and double those at the inaugural festival last year. He thanked all concerned for their cooperation and support. The performers were David and Junji Gomez from Malaysia and Philippines, KCP4 (India and Germany), The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (New Orleans), Luis Coloma (Spain), Orak NAA Naa (Morocco and Germany), George Washing Machine Quartet (Australia, UK and France), Habana Sax (Cuba) and SON2NOS (UK and Philippines). Among the audience on the first night were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan, Urban Development and Tourism Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and chief executive officer of Sarawak Tourism Board, Gracie Giekie. Lu said in keeping with the tradition, one of the top band from among the eight would return to perform at next year’s festival on May 9 and 10. Seven new jazz bands will also be invited.
