The Memorial Ceremony is organized by the Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism in conjunction with 45th anniversary of Sarawak in Malaysia. It is dedicated to the gallant war veterans who had fought in Sarawak during the period of Indonesian confrontation (1963-1965) and communist insurgency (1965-1973). Besides the local Malaysian Army, Policemen, Field Force, Border Scouts and Sarawak Administrative Officers, there were other soldiers from Commonwealth countries who had served in Sarawak and Sabah during both periods.
In this regard, the Ministry has the pleasure to invite the public and tourists in Kuching or Sarawak, all Commonwealth veteran are warmly invited to witness this auspicious occasion, scheduled at 8.30 a.m., Sarawak Tourism Complex (STC), Kuching, on Saturday, 23rd August 2008. The Governor of Sarawak, as the Guest of Honour has agreed to grace this occasion.
This is the second year that such an occasion is being held in Kuching, Sarawak. It is a testimonial of the continuous recognition of State Government towards the veterans’ invaluable service and contribution in defending Sarawak and the formation of Malaysia.
In addition, an exhibition on the gallant war veterans will be launched by the Governor soon after the Ceremony ends. The exhibition at Block C of STC will be running until 31 July 2008. It shows the collections of several agencies such as Sarawak Museum Department, Pustaka Negeri, Arkib and association of former policemen and army in the form of pictures (posters size) and write-ups that were taken/ recorded during the respective periods. Some of the old weapons used in both eras will also be displayed during the exhibition.
