The anniversary of the declaration of Kuching as a city is celebrated every August. You will surely be entertained throughout this month long festival with activities from a city parade to nightly exhibitions, stage shows, concerts and competitions.
The earlier festival was called ‘The Sarawak Festival’ and aimed at promoting the development of arts. The Kuching Festival materialised the following year, and has been held annually ever since.
The idea of the Kuching Festival was first suggested in November 1985 with the intention of reviving a similar festival, which was originally organized, prior to the formation of Malaysia, but which had subsequently been abandoned.
The first Kuching Festival was initiated in April 1986, by the Kuching Municipal Council, as an effort in response to the nation's call to organize activities to highlight the nation's tourist attractions for delegates of the PATA Conference that same year.
The Kuching Festival promotes culture and arts. Events throughout the month emphasize this, as members of the public and visitors to Kuching get the opportunity to enjoy dramatic performances, musical concerts, galleries, exhibitions and so forth. Food is another thing visitors can experience during the event.
This aspect of the Kuching Festival plans to boost the local food and tourism industry.
Where to go
Kuching Festival is mainly celebrated smack in the middle of Kuching city and at popular locations around the city. The festival includes food fairs, art exhibitions and cultural shows. You will see the whole city decorated with flowers and colourful lights. Main venue will be at the Kuching City Waterfront. The highlight at the Kuching Festival Parade will be the unique participation from the city's mascot, the Cat!
