After dark, shopping complexes and eating places are the busiest places in Sarawak's cities and towns. Shopping complexes close at 9:30 pm, but some eating places are open as late as midnight and beyond.

After 6pm, Kuching will be filled with colorful streetlights, enhancing the natural vigour and charm of this vibrant city. The city centre will showcase Kuching's rich culture and tradition with beautifully lit up monuments and pre and post colonial landmarks such as the Fort Margherita and The Astana.

Melodious rhythm from adjoining entertainment outlets, clubs, bistros and nightspots will surely tempt the energetic few. Indeed, for those into the pub and club scene, both Kuching and Miri have the hottest nightlife. The many hotels in these two cities house pubs, lounges, and discotheques for the night owl.

Outside the hotels, more karaoke lounges and nightclubs can be found. Many hotels offer live-band entertainment.

Here are only a small selection of city centre pubs and bars - the inquisitive will make their own discoveries.

PUBS: 99, Jalan Green Hill (near Harbour View Hotel). Large corner pub near the Jalan Green Hill budget hotels. Quiet during weekdays, young lively crowd at weekends.
BarZing, Travillion Mall, Jalan Petanak. New and stylishly designed chill out bar, playing an eclectic selection of chill-out music.
Cat City, Taman Sri Sarawak, opposite Hilton. A three-in-one pub where you can stay in the same place from happy hour to closing time, offering a breezy open-air balcony bar, a well-equipped karaoke lounge and a music bar with live bands and DJ. Open daily from 4.30pm. Happy hour 4.30 - 9.30pm.
The Club, Crowne Plaza Riverside. Cozy pub & cocktail lounge, ideal for enjoying a drink without the loud music, 5 - 11pm.
The Cottage, Jalan Bukit Mata. Karaoke nights, ladies night, wine nights and live music are all on the agenda, plus sound levels are nicely restrained. Lunchtime till late.
Discovery, Taman Sri Sarawak. Large open-air corner pub playing top 40 music. Busy at weekends.
Eagle's Nest, Jalan Bukit Mata Kuching. With 2 pool tables, a decent sound system, a good selection of beers and wines and food at sensible prices, you can't go wrong. Open from 4pm daily. Happy hours until 9.30.
Grappa, Padungan Road. Located a few doors down from Soho, similar set up with a slightly younger and mixed crowd. Music is a mixed of House, 80's and R&B.
Jambu Tapas Bar, 32 Crookshank Road. Cosy terrace bar (with very reasonable prices) located in the garden setting of a colonial style bungalow. Open 5.30pm - 12.30am, closed Mondays. Live jazz band on Friday nights from 8.30pm to late. 15 minutes walk from city centre or take a taxi.
Latino, Taman Sri Sarawak, opposite Hilton. Friendly open-air corner pub with reasonable priced drinks. DJ plays not-too-loud music.
MC3, Travillion Mall, Jalan Petanak. Large 1st floor bar with dance floor that attracts a young party crowd. DJ plays a mix of house, trance and techno. Packed at weekends. Over 30s will definitely feel out of place here.
Miami, Taman Sri Sarawak, opposite Hilton, loud Top 40 and Hip Hop music downstairs, with a more relaxing lounge bar and balcony upstairs.
Monsoon, Riverbank Suites, next to Holiday Inn. Friendly waterfront bar - the perfect place to enjoy sunset over the Sarawak River.
Piccadily's Music Café, Jalan Bukit Mata. Friendly if slightly chaotic family-run corner bar. Huge TV if you are looking for a place to watch live football.
Rejang Lobby Lounge, Holiday Inn Kuching. Small cosy bar, popular with the happy hour crowd. Bartender knows how to mix a near-perfect martini.
Senso, Hilton Kuching. A stylish place to chill out. Offers a selection of specialty martinis and cocktails. The resident DJ's mix of French house and acid jazz, plus first rate live music, add up to a very back atmosphere - not at all like a hotel bar.
Soho, 64 Jalan Padungan. Still Kuching's most fashionable pub located in an attractive downtown area. The simple earthy décor and jazz. Latin/dance-oriented music selection attracts a friendly, up-market crowd. Wide variety of bar snacks plus a la carte meals in the attached restaurant.
